"Taper jean girl, with a motel face” –Kings of Leon

If there ever was a look that was underrated, it would be layering
denim. I know that it’s one of those love it or hate it things and
it’s been dubbed the ‘Canadian tuxedo,’ but I find that most people
shy away from this look that is actually extremely refreshing if done
correctly (and I say ‘if’ because my goodness you will look like
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in the 90s if you don’t keep this
‘fresh factor’ in mind). The key to getting it right is firstly your
choice of denim. I would choose either a lighter shade of blue denim
to contrast the heaviness of this material and to avoid looking too
bulky, or pair two different washes together. Secondly, the cut is
obviously what will structure this look. I truly think that one can
never go wrong with a great button up. This paired with skinny jeans
makes for a more modern take on the look but don’t shy away from
boyfriend jeans or denim jackets either – this blend shouts casual
chic and with the right accessories it has the perfect feminine twist.
The addition of textured accessories adds some excitement to this
clean look. It really is a playground for accessorizing, so go all out
with a colourful scarf or necklace to break the blue. Alternatively,
keep your accessories neutral, such as a leather bag, and your look
will stay modern and crisp. What’s more, denim works for any age – old
or young and it always will, in my opinion. Oh, and unless you are an
80s catalogue model, don’t mix acid-wash boyfriend jeans with an
acid-wash denim bomber jacket, please.
